Prince Island has long been a whaling port, and all the sailors who set off from there first visit the Roe witch for spells and charms to keep them safe.  Avery Roe has grown up at her grandmother’s knee, watching, learning and waiting for the time when her own magic will unlock itself and she will inherit her grandmother’s role in the community, a role Avery’s mother has rejected.

For now, Avery’s magic consists of the ability to interpret dreams.  When one of her own dreams convinces her that she will be murdered, she sets out to unlock her magic early, because there is one legend on Prince Island that has held true: you cannot kill the Roe witch.

Kendall Kulper’s writing is deft and vivid and her research into the lore and legends of whaling creates a wonderful world that could have been.
